# Why does a trades business need a website AI can read?

**Because more customers now ask an AI assistant who to call, and the assistant can only name a business whose website it can fetch and read.** A trades site that turns crawlers away, or draws its words in with code, is invisible to that answer. Blue Crane Works, in Hamilton, Ontario, builds trades websites every major AI crawler can read, with a connection an assistant can use to send the owner a real quote request.

## How are customers choosing a contractor now?

More of them ask a question and read the answer instead of scrolling a list. Google answers many searches
with an AI Overview or in AI Mode, and ChatGPT, Copilot and Perplexity answer directly. Pew found that people
[click a link far less often](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/07/22/google-users-are-less-likely-to-click-on-links-when-an-ai-summary-appears-in-the-results/) when an AI summary appears above the results. The
answer names two or three businesses, not ten.

That matters more for a trade than for most businesses. The job is local, it is often urgent, and it is
decided on one call. "Who can fix a broken garage door spring in Stoney Creek on a Saturday?" has an answer
made of hours, service area and services, and the assistant builds it from the pages it can read.

## What does an AI need from your website before it can name you?

Three things, and the companies that run these assistants say so in writing. Google:
"[There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features)" beyond
being indexed and eligible for a snippet. OpenAI: "[Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots)."
So the crawler has to get in, the words have to be on the page, and nothing on the page can forbid quoting it.

| Needs | What goes wrong on a typical trades site | What a Blue Crane site does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| To get in | A firewall or a website-builder bot setting turns AI crawlers away, with no symptom anyone can see | Every major search and AI crawler checked by name, at the robots file and at the firewall |
| Words it can read | Text drawn in by script, so a crawler receives an empty page | Every word in the page itself, plus a plain Markdown copy for AI tools |
| Facts that agree | Hours, phone and service area differ between the website and the Google profile | One business name and one set of facts, the same on every page and in the business details search engines read |
| Permission to quote | A nosnippet or noarchive setting left switched on | Checked on every page before launch, and again every quarter |

This is not a rare problem. When we tested the 14 firms Google names for AI web work in Hamilton, three of
them turned away ChatGPT's or Claude's crawler on their own homepage. The full results are on
[our Hamilton web design page](https://bluecraneworks.ca/web-design-hamilton-ontario), and the
[five-minute check](https://bluecraneworks.ca/articles/can-chatgpt-see-my-website) shows how to test a site yourself.

## Does a readable website mean ChatGPT will recommend me?

No, and nobody can honestly sell that. Bing says it plainly in its
[webmaster guidelines](https://www.bing.com/webmasters/help/webmaster-guidelines-30fba23a): "SEO does not guarantee rankings or traffic, and GEO does
not guarantee grounding or citations in AI experiences." A readable website makes you eligible. The assistant
still chooses. What raises the odds is what always did: pages that answer the questions your customers really
ask, reviews, and other websites that mention you. A website a machine cannot read is out before it starts.

## What comes next: can a customer book a contractor through ChatGPT?

Not fully yet, but the connection it needs is being built in the open. The standard is called MCP, and its
own documentation describes it as "[an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems](https://modelcontextprotocol.io/docs/getting-started/intro)",
through which "AI applications like Claude or ChatGPT can connect to data sources, tools and workflows". OpenAI
now invites developers to "[Build and publish plugins with skills, MCP servers, and optional UI](https://developers.openai.com/plugins/llms.txt)",
listed in the ChatGPT Directory after a review.

**What we have already built.** A Blue Crane website can carry an AI business card: a connection
an assistant can use to read the business's published facts, search and quote its pages, and send a real quote
request straight to the owner. It is running today on this site and on Referral Flooring, whose card is listed in
the [official MCP Registry](https://registry.modelcontextprotocol.io/), the public directory of these connections.

**What is not here yet.** Today an assistant uses a connection like this when someone has
connected it. No AI company documents finding a local business's connection on its own, and what our sites
accept today is a quote request, not a booked time in your calendar.

**Our forecast, not a promise from any AI company.** We expect the major assistants to open up to
small businesses' connections over the next two years, the way search engines once opened up to small businesses'
websites, and booking a visit to follow the quote request. A trades site with real facts, a connection that works
and a request that reaches the owner will be ready the day they do. A site a machine cannot read will not be part
of that conversation at all.

| Step | Where it stands | On a Blue Crane site |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Found | Working today, through each AI company's own crawler and search index | Every crawler checked by name |
| Read | Working today, when the words are in the page | Every page, plus a Markdown copy |
| Named in an answer | Possible today, never guaranteed by anyone | Built to every published condition |
| Sends you a quote request | Working today, for an assistant connected to the site | Live on this site and on Referral Flooring |
| Books a time with you | Not yet documented by any AI company. Our forecast | The next step we are building toward |

## What does this cost a trades business?

A [Blue Crane managed website](https://bluecraneworks.ca/solutions/websites.html) is $0 up front and $100 a month on a
twelve-month term, with the readability work included and re-checked every quarter as the engines change their
rules. The AI business card is added where a site has a real job for an assistant to do, like taking a quote
request, and is scoped in writing with the site. If you already have a website you want to keep, the
[AI Visibility Pass](https://bluecraneworks.ca/solutions/ai-visibility.html) does the readability work on the site you have.

## How do I check my own website today?

Run the [free check](https://bluecraneworks.ca/solutions/ai-visibility.html#free-check): type your address and get a plain-English scorecard of
what the AI crawlers receive from your homepage. If it comes back clean, we will tell you that too.

## Want this checked and fixed on your site?

The AI Visibility Pass runs every check in this article against your live site, fixes what it
finds, and hands you the proof. Fixed quote, written guarantee. On a managed website it is included
from launch.
