What 433A is
433A is the Ontario trade code for Industrial Mechanic (Millwright). The Certificate of Qualification is issued by Skilled Trades Ontario. It is a voluntary trade, meaning the certificate is not legally required to work as a millwright in Ontario, but employers commonly require or strongly prefer it.
Day to day, the trade covers installing, maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing industrial machinery and mechanical systems in plants and factories: rigging and hoisting, aligning and levelling equipment, bearings and drives, pumps, hydraulics and pneumatics, and preventive maintenance.
Voluntary does not mean optional in practice. No law says you need the ticket, but the shops worth working for ask for it, and it is what moves the hourly rate.

The apprenticeship route
Complete a registered apprenticeship. Hours and competencies are set and published by Skilled Trades Ontario.
The experience route
Experienced workers can apply to Skilled Trades Ontario for a trade equivalency assessment. If the assessment is approved, the next step is to challenge the certifying exam.
The Red Seal exam
Millwright is a Red Seal trade. Passing the interprovincial Red Seal exam adds the Red Seal endorsement, which lets the holder work across provinces without re-examination.
The Red Seal exam is multiple-choice, built from the Red Seal Occupational Standard for the trade. The sample questions and exam counselling sheets are published on red-seal.ca.
