Trade certification, explained.

Getting a trade ticket in Ontario runs through two systems, the provincial Certificate of Qualification and the interprovincial Red Seal. This hub explains both in plain language, one trade at a time, with the official sources linked.

C of Q + Red Seal Trade by trade Official sources linked

The two systems

In Ontario, Certificates of Qualification (C of Q) and apprenticeship registration are administered by Skilled Trades Ontario.

The Red Seal is the interprovincial standard for the skilled trades. A Red Seal endorsement on a provincial certificate lets a tradesperson work in other provinces and territories without further examination in Red Seal trades. Details are published at red-seal.ca.

C of Q vs Red Seal, in one line: the C of Q is your Ontario licence; the Red Seal is the endorsement that makes it portable across Canada.
